Milwaukee bar Sugar Maple hosting 'I Think You Should Leave' pop

Dec 28, 2023

Grab your Dangerous Nights crew, don your most complicated Dan Flashes shirt and get ready to zip line your way into The Sugar Maple, 441 E. Lincoln Ave., for the Bay View bar's “I Think You Should Leave” pop-up experience Aug. 31 through Sept. 3.

The pop-up centers around the popular Netflix sketch-comedy series created by and starring comedian Tim Robinson, which released its third season May 30. The show has spawned a cult-like following by fans spouting quotes and creating memes of its most memorable moments, which inspired the names of some of the pop-up's special events, food and drink specials.

This is Sugar Maple's fourth pop-up. It previously hosted Studio Ghibli Pop-Up & Art Show in October 2022, Wes Fest: A Wes Anderson Themed Pop-Up & Art Show in February and an "Avatar: The Last Airbender" pop-up in June.

Here’s what to know about this pop-up, from food and drink options to when each special event will take place.

Sugar Maple’s bartenders will craft specialty cocktails during the pop-up, all named after popular quotes from the show, including “Back Away, Banana Breath," “Bones Are Their Money” and “That’s a Chunky.”

A nonalcoholic drink called “Down the Hatch, Bon Appetit,” will also be available. If you “eat paper on the time,” this is the drink for you: chocolate milk in a paper carton, with an option to add Delta-9 THC.

The bar also will keep two themed beers on tap, including 1840 Brewing Company’s Dan Flashes IPA and Brewer’s Kitchen’s Fifty-Five Rocks pale ale.

Guests can expect food specials during two days of the pop-up, including a hot dog grill-out on the patio from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, to raise money for Savage Support, an organization that provides services to individuals fighting breast cancer in southeastern Wisconsin.

On Sunday, Sept. 3, the bar will host “Truffoni’s Restaurant." From 2 to 6 p.m., guests can order specially themed items created by chef Aaron Miles of Milwaukee’s Oggie’s Kitchen & Bar, including fully loaded nachos, “little buff boys” and “sloppy steaks” (which have been confirmed not to be just bottled water poured over beef steaks).

There will be a number of contests and other special events throughout the weekend as well.

From 8 to 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1, The Sugar Maple will hold a costume contest, awarding prizes in three categories: Best Overall Costume, Most Complicated Pattern and Little Buff Boy.

From 10 p.m. to midnight Saturday, Sept. 2, local comedian Michael Kittelson will host a “Say Whatever the Hell You Want,” open-mic comedy night in the bar’s front room. Comedians are encouraged to try to be funny, to try to make jokes, but just don’t make anybody have the worst day at their job.

While guests of all ages are welcome throughout the weekend, Sunday, Sept. 3, may be the youngsters’ time to shine. From 1 to 2:15 p.m., The Sugar Maple will hold a “Baby of the Year” competition (babies must be between zero and 3 years old to qualify). Babies will be judged during the bar’s baby parade from 1 to 2 p.m., with the Baby of the Year award announcement at 2:15 p.m. It has not been confirmed whether Bart Harley Jarvis will be entered in the competition.

Artwork themed around the show will be on display from Aug. 31 through Sept. 28. The bar is currently accepting artist submissions through 8 p.m. Aug. 24. Selected artists will be notified by Aug. 25.

To apply, send a direct message to The Sugar Maple on Instagram with your name, email address, link to examples of your art and your proposed work. All materials and media are welcome, as long as the work adheres to the “I Think You Should Leave” theme.

A vendor fair from 1 to 6 p.m. Sept. 2 will feature “I Think You Should Leave”-themed merchandise for sale from local makers. The Sugar Maple is accepting applications for vendors selling things like jewelry, prints, snacks, housewares, apparel and more.

To apply to be a vendor, send a direct message to The Sugar Maple on Instagram with your name, email address and a link to your work. Vendor submissions will close Aug. 28 or as soon as the spots have been filled.
