According to Loacker, sustainability and a people-centric approach are at the heart of the brand’s success

Italian confectionery brand Loacker has underlined its strong sustainability credentials in a detailed ‘Road to Sustainability’ report.

Loacker describes itself as an “international company which even after three generations still maintains a family-run business model… boasting the values and quality of a niche family-run patisserie”. Those values include “high-quality and genuine products, sustainability, and a people-centric approach, which are at the heart of the brand’s constant growth”.

Loacker’s story dates to 1925 and Alfons Loacker, who founded the brand and introduced the first Loacker Wafer in Bolzano, the capital of Italy’s South Tyrol region. The company is now managed by third-generation family members who have developed Loacker into an internationally known name, with a global turnover of €481.33 million.

According to the report, Loacker’s steady growth stems from brand internationalisation efforts as well as product innovation and diversification. Its fastest-growing markets are the Middle East, Asia and North America.

Loacker offers a wide range of Wafers, including Classic, Minis, Snack Maxi, bite-sized Quadratini, Thins, Less Sugar, Multi Grain and Chocolat. Other products include chocolate bars, pralines and gift sets.

Loacker uses natural ingredients with no added colours, flavourings or preservatives. Its cocoa is sourced from Ecuador and the Côte d’Ivoire, hazelnuts are 100% Italian, Bourbon vanilla is from Madagascar and milk is Alpine, from animals fed with non-GMO feed and “totally traceable”.

“Sustainability is a versatile concept: in Loacker’s case it means pursuing a sustainable growth married to economic, social, and environmental responsibility,” Loacker stated. The company aims to “guarantee high-quality products, protect nature, play an active part in society, and ensure the future of the family-run business by investing in disciplined growth and effective cost control”.

Paper-based packaging is the way forward for Loacker

“Changing the status quo will be challenging but Loacker is confident it will integrate sustainability across the entire value chain and strike the correct balance between nature, economy, and social responsibility.”

Loacker’s sustainable vision rests on five core pillars:

Last year, the company upped its focus on increasing the use of mono-materials, recycling plastic packaging and eliminating unnecessary packaging along the entire value chain, “maximising sustainability without compromising product quality and freshness”.

Loacker also launched the first recyclable paper-based packaging for its Nutritional & Functional Multigrain and 30% Less Sugar product line. Five lines – Minis Mix, Best of Moments, Gardena Minis Mix, Patisserie Selection and Tortina Selection – were introduced into travel retail, with outer pouches made of FSC-certified paper.

“Last year, the paper pouch line generated about 60% of duty free channel sales, suggesting a growing consumer focus on environmentally friendly packaging,” Loacker added. The Road to Sustainability report can be accessed here.
