Made properly, the all-American cupcake is a perfect combo of light cake and sweet frosting. Some people are just finding out they’ve been eating this popular dessert all wrong.

I can answer that. For compact little cakes sitting neatly in little paper or foil liners, they sure are messy to eat – and that’s because we’re eating them all wrong. I’m not suggesting anything as lame as using a fork, but there is a better method than the traditional chomping from the top down where you wind up with a face full of sticky icing. Plus, the ratio of cake to icing is never quite right because the cake gets squished down when you try to tackle the whole height of the cupcake in one bite.

The foodies at TastingTable.com have a much better method. They suggest that the best way to eat a cupcake is to turn it into a sandwich…sort of like a whoopie pie with the frosting in the middle of two hunks of cake.

All you need to do is break or cut the height of the cake-only portion in half. Take the half you removed, and stick it on top of the frosting, and press down slightly. There you go! Your cupcake just got transformed into an icing sandwich. Think Hostess Suzy Q, which tragically, was discontinued for a second time in 2021.

Turning your cupcake into a sandwich makes it even more fun, and it eliminates the mess because the frosting is in the middle, not on top. If you try this method out on a horde of little kids at a birthday party, you’ll be forever grateful that you read this post!

By the way, if you get a cupcake craving when you’re in Tampa, Wright’s Gourmet House on South Dale Mabry is still the place to go. Nothing else like Wright’s cakes and cupcakes – anywhere!

We couldn’t leave out the nationally ranked donut shop from our list. With customers flocking from all over the Tampa area, we totally understand the hype for fresh, classic donuts. Also any donuts that are left at the end of the day are donated to a local church, we love a restaurant that feeds the community!
